How did the International Storytelling Center begin?

In 1973 Jonesborough played host to the first National Storytelling Festival, created by Jonesborough resident Jimmy Neil Smith. Two years later, the National Storytelling Association was founded. Is catering available for my event?

Yes, however, arrangements for food and beverages are the sole responsibility of the user and are not included in the rental charge. All food must be prepared off-site and served by a caterer that is licensed and insured for off-premise locations. The caterer must be pre-approved by ISC staff. For more information you can contact ISC’s event coordinator at (800) 952-8392.

How many people can ISC accommodate for my event?

Our facilities can accommodate up to 120 people in one meeting room depending on the type of seating you prefer.

Is there a smoking area available?

The Center is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is prohibited in the Center and on the grounds of the entire Center campus.

Do I have to make a deposit for facility rentals?

Within two weeks of a confirmed booking, deposit of half the total rental amount is due to hold the space, the remainder of the rental fee and damage deposit is due two weeks prior to the event date.

What time does my event need to end?

The facility has an outside event curfew of 10 p.m., inside events must end by midnight. Clean-up may extend one hour past curfew.

What airline options are available for traveling to Jonesborough?

The Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI), conveniently located less than 20 miles from Jonesborough, offers non-stop service to four hubs in the United States. TCRA’s carriers include Allegiant, Delta Connection and US Airways Express. The McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville, Tennessee is located approximately 100 miles from Jonesborough.

Are there any travel discounts or special rates available to National Storytelling Festival attendees?

Jonesborough is easy to reach by car. From Interstate 81, Jonesborough is located along U.S. Highway 11 E. It is 15 minutes southwest of Johnson City, 25 miles northeast of Greeneville, and 90 minutes north of Knoxville, Tennessee. Special airline rates are available to National Storytelling Festival attendees. Fly Delta Airlines into Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI) or McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Knoxville and save 2% off the lowest published discounted/restricted fare, 5% off published restricted fare, or 10% off full/non-restricted fare on travel between September 29, 2014 and October 9, 2014. Tri-Cities Regional Airport is conveniently located 20 miles from Jonesborough. For lowest fares on any airline, call Summit Travel, our official travel agency, at 423-282-4223 and ask for Angie Phipps.
