Remembering Howard Gray (1949–2025)

The International Storytelling Center is sad to announce the passing of our longtime supporter and former board member, Howard Gray. Howard’s thoughtful leadership and passion for storytelling will leave a lasting mark on the organization.

One of our favorite memories of Howard was during the pandemic in 2020, when the National Storytelling Festival moved to an online platform. Howard was one of the many people who watched with his family from home, but had an idea for how to make the occasion special. Howard rented a big tent for his backyard, moved a giant TV outside, and invited his loved ones to his very own “storytelling festival,” reminiscent of his family’s tradition of attending the beloved event in Jonesborough.

Howard’s life was filled with colorful stories just like that. In fact, when he retired from the company he led for more than 40 years, Gray Construction, he anointed himself the company’s Chief Storytelling Officer. He was passionate about storytelling as an art form as well as ISC’s mission to build a better world through story. He generously donated his money, time, and expertise to help us achieve it. Howard’s legacy and love for this community will continue to inspire us.

While we will miss our friend and colleague, ISC is deeply grateful to have enjoyed so many years of Howard’s steadfast friendship and support. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
