SHEro’s Journey Day Camp
July 15-26, 2019
9:30 am- 1:30 pm
SHEro’s Journey is part of our Stories for Change programming, a series of new youth initiatives from the International Storytelling Center.
Recent studies measuring self-confidence show that during pivotal tween years, a girl’s confidence and self-esteem take a major dip, more so than male peers her age, and that the dip is more likely to last into adulthood.
Using familiar fairytales, folktales, and fables, SHEro’s Journey will take a look at the central messages of these stories and how they tend to shape the lives of girls and women. Next, we’ll give these tales modern makeovers to illustrate how narratives can change and be re-imagined, encouraging them to take control of their own stories and choices. Finally, girls will get to embody characters of their own creation, empowering them to face the challenges of the modern world with creativity and confidence.
Using one-on-one work with trained storytellers, teaching artists, writers, and narrative specialists, the program will weave in story circles, empowerment exercises, peer collaboration, connections to nature, and reflective work.
SHEro’s Journey is free and limited to 12 participants between ages 10-13. The program is currently only available to participants in East Tennessee, and includes lunch and all programming materials. Registration is based on a first come, first serve basis. Please note: Because the programming is short and intensive, registrants must commit to attending all sessions: Monday-Friday, July 15-26, 9:30 am – 1:30 pm. Transportation to and from the International Storytelling Center must be provided by parent/guardian. Register now.
