Shero’s Journey Day Camp

June 14-18, 2021

Monday thru Friday

9:30 am to 1:30 pm

Shero’s Journey is part of our Stories for Change programming, a series of youth initiatives from the International Storytelling Center.

Studies measuring self-confidence show that during pivotal tween years, a girl’s confidence and self-esteem take a major dip, more so than male peers her age, and that the dip is more likely to last into adulthood. This program aims to combat that dip and help girls feel more confident and capable.

Using familiar fairytales, folktales, and fables, Shero’s Journey will take a look at the central messages of these stories and how they tend to shape the lives of girls and women.  Next, we’ll give these tales modern makeovers to illustrate how narratives can change and be re-imagined, encouraging them to take control of their own stories and choices. Finally, girls will get to embody characters of their own creation, empowering them to face the challenges of the modern world with creativity and confidence.

Using one-on-one work with trained storytellers, teaching artists, and narrative specialists, the program will weave in empowerment exercises, peer collaboration, connections to nature, and reflective work.

Shero’s Journey is limited to 12 participants between ages 10-13. The program is currently only available to participants in East Tennessee, and includes all programming materials. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

All programming will take place in-person at ISC’s campus in downtown Jonesborough and will adhere to the latest Covid-19 safety guidelines from local and state authorities. Such guidelines include mask-wearing, hand washing, social distancing, and frequent disinfecting of surfaces. Also, weather permitting, sessions will be held outdoors. We will continue to monitor the ongoing Covid-19 situation, and will adjust programming as necessary.

As an additional safety measure, we also ask that participants pack their own lunches each day.

Please note: Because the programming is short and intensive, registrants must commit to attending all sessions: June 14-18, 9:30 am – 1:30 pm. Transportation to and from the International Storytelling Center must be provided by parent/guardian.

Shero’s Journey is presented free of charge for participants, however, we encourage you to consider a $15 per participant donation to ISC to help cover program costs. Donate today.
