I was fortunate enough to see an exhibit of Ms. Ringgold’s quilts at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, NC, a few years ago. They were astonishing to me because I am a seamstress and I’ve made some “story quilts” of my own! I loved that her quilts had words on them as well as pictures Mine do not, but I think I’d like to try to do one that does. Stitching fabric together to make a design or a picture is a painstaking task, but it’s so satisfying to use what otherwise might be discarded to make something beautiful.

Kirah, this blog, Building Stories, is stunning. The blog, of course, is itself a story. A beautiful story. I feel I know your father, and he and I have never met. The references you make and examples you give of blending the old and the new are intriguing and insightful. Most importantly, the story you tell gives roots to the pioneering work that ISC and Ballad Health are pursuing at the Ballad Health hospital in Erwin. This is also an opportunity to express my appreciation to Deborah Lowery, the new director of storytelling at Ballad Health, for providing the opportunity to showcase the power of storytelling as a tool for healing,.
